Welcome back, pERE community!

The program in Environmental and Resource Economics is excited to meet again in person on Mondays from 12-1 in 426 Mumford Hall. We have some excellent new students this year and two new pERE faculty: Prof. Andy Hultgren and Prof. Marin Skidmore.  Put it on your calendar today, you won’t want to miss out!

There are four ways to be involved:

  1. Sign up for the class. Please enroll in zero credits if you don’t plan to present, and one credit if you plan to present. Please sign up for 594R.
  2. Show up. We’re excited to be together in person in Mumford 426 again this year. Hybrid option available, subscribe to the listserv below for access.
  3. Present. As always, the goal of the workshop it to provide an opportunity to present research in a friendly and constructive environment. We welcome presentations of polished work or new ideas. If you’re interested please contact us at here as soon as possible (more details on that below).
  4. Coordinate. We are looking for up to two grad student volunteers to serve as co-coordinators of the joint seminar. The position is ideal for a third year student who is finished with classes but not yet on the job market – it is great experience and also for your CV. Let us know if you are interested!

Who should give a talk?

  1. PhD students or postdocs who want to go on the job market this year, and so should give a practice job talk
  2. Third year ACE PhD students who want to present their completed second year papers
  3. Any student or faculty member who has work in progress they would like some feedback on.

If you are interested in giving a talk, contact us here as soon as possible to secure your preferred date, and no later than Friday, 8/26. In your email, please provide the following information:

  1. Your name
  2. Title of the paper/presentation
  3. Abstract of the paper
  4. Are you on the job market?
  5. Preferences:
    1. a full hour presentation (recommended for job market presentation) or a shorter half hour presentation (recommended for pitching new ideas and masters students)?
    2. In-person (recommended) or virtual?
    3. Fall or spring (specific date requests can also be made)
Once we know who wants to give talks, we’ll create and circulate a schedule. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

The program in Environmental and Resource Economics explores the relationships between environmental quality, economic prosperity, and human behavior. Students and faculty from departments across the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are using economics to analyze policy regarding some of today’s most critical environmental and natural resource issues.

pERE offers courses, seminars and an opportunity to work and study in a vibrant community of some of the nation’s leading scholars in environmental and resource economics. Its faculty serve on major government advisory bodies, editorial boards, and have been visiting scholars at universities around the globe. Their expertise ranges from environmental law and regulatory policy to advanced methods for the analysis of ecological-economic problems.

A weekly pERE graduate seminar provides students and faculty the opportunity to obtain feedback on work in progress and brings outside speakers in to present to the group. Courses offered through the program in environmental and resource economics cover modern economic theory and its application to problems in environmental regulation, environmental quality, and natural resource management.
